Shumen host of the International Speed ​​Chess and Blitz Tournament

Shumen will host the International Accelerated Chess and Blitz Tournament, which will take place from July 28 to 30 in the Shumen Arena. The competition is held under the patronage of the mayor Lyubomir Hristov and with the support of the Shumen Municipality.

A record number of competitors will participate in this year’s edition of the tournament. Over 200 chess players from Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, Italy, Croatia, North Macedonia, Greece, Turkey, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, India and Libya have applied to participate, the organizers announced. “Among them are 12 grandmasters, 11 international masters, FIDE-masters and many more strong chess players. Two world champions for juniors in the 1980s will also be here – Grandmaster Kiril Georgiev, who is ranked number 1, and Grandmaster Vasil Spasov from Targovishte, a competitor of the Shumen Sports Chess Club. An extremely strong race is shaping up. A record number of children are expected in the competition,” said tournament director Atanas Dimitrov at a special press conference in hall 203 of the municipal administration.

The president of the Shumen club Iliyan Haralanov added that the prize fund for the competition is also a record – 20,000 BGN.

The opening is on Friday (July 28) at 13.00, with the race starting at 14.30. On the first day, 4 of the 9 rounds of the accelerated chess tournament will be played. On Saturday, 3 more rounds will be held. At 15:30 the blitz tournament will start. On Sunday at 10.00 are the last 2 rounds of the speed chess competition and after 13.00 the best in the competition will be announced and awarded. Entry for spectators is free.
