The first primary school in Bulgaria was opened in Shumen

Bulgaria is famous for having very well organized schools during the Enlightenment (around 1850). Here, Sava Dobroplodny opened a girl’s school with a class of 12 girls. They were taught Bulgarian grammar, history geography, zoology, psaltery and needlework. Until 1878 (the Liberation of Bulgaria) 115 girls were studyng at the school. They studied 4 years of primary school and the at their last year, the girls studied pedagogy, so that they could become teachers after finishing school.

The school was at this building, known as the Andreykovo school.
