Shumen Regional Museum of History keeps a collection of more than 150 000 artifacts (5th millennium BC – 20th c.). It makes it one of the richest museums in Bulgaria. The permanent exposition occupies 8 halls, namely Prehistory, Antiquity, Middle Ages, History of Bulgarian nation 15th – 19th c., Christian culture, and the Treasury hall. Some of the most valuable artifacts are the unique findings from the Kodzhadermen mound – one of the richest archaeological cultures in South-Eastern Europe (5th millennium BC), authentic tombs dating from 4th c. BC from Smyadovo and Lovetz – the only of their kind in Bulgaria displayed in museum environment. The museum also has the largest collection of medieval Bulgarian and Byzantine seals, the largest coin collection, an elaborate gold horse bridle ornament found in the tomb of Ivanski (4th c. BC), gold jewelry findings from Pliska and Shumen fortress.
