It’s one of the most visited and beautiful places within the territory of “Shumen plateau” Nature park. It begins west of the residential districts of Shumen. Its name comes from Turkish (kyoshk) meaning summer house. That was how many people used to call the holiday dwellings near the vineyards. The place impressed the geographer Barbier de Bocage who described it in 1810 as “The surrounding areas of Shumen have a large number of places for walk and magnificent gardens. Underneath the Shumen Fortress there’s a wide open space called “Dagbunar” (Mountain spring). It’s a true summer vacation spot. There’s a little river flowing quickly through which moves the wheels of a lot of mills.”
In 1897 began afforestation of the locality. From 1904 till 1953 the area was afforested with black pine, spruce, Pseudotsuga douglasii, hornbeam, maple, beech, sycamore etc. Today Kyoshkove are still like a green oasis near the city. A century-old chestnut trees, linden trees, and sycamore map out the main alley. In early spring the ground is vividly carpeted with snowdrops, squill, crocuses, cyclamen, lesser celandine and many other spring flowers. Visitors can relax under the shade of the alleys, beside the spring water fountains, and benches near the small pond. There are playgrounds for kids.
A lot of tourist trails start from here.
